"I feel that I must write and tell you how you the Sure Step cane has greatly improved the quality of my life.I am 57 years old and have suffered from the after effects of Polio since I was two. Luckily, during my youth I was not hindered by this disease to any great extent, but as the years have pasted, post-polio has severely limited my physical capabilities, especially walking.My favorite leisure activity is deer hunting and I had decided that last season would be the end of that recreational activity, due to falling with a regular cane as I was crossing a cornfield. During the off season, I thought about different ways I could overcome this problem of falling while on soft or rough terrain and designed my own cane by tracing my shoe onto a 2X6 piece of wood and then cut a cane handle to attach it to. This worked to a degree, but as you can guess, there was no "movement" with the foot. It was pick-up and plop down. One evening I was on the Internet looking for canes, when I came across your web site and found the answer to my problem, your product.Since July, my mobility has been greatly enhanced because of the Sure Step. This hunting season, I have gone across fields of all types with no problems. On the job, I can now walk on the tile that is wet without the fear of the cane slipping and causing a fall. "I am writing to thank you for the kindnesses you showed me in allowing me to use the Strutters over the past six weeks.Having been in a wheelchair for four months and then traditional crutches for two months, I found the Strutters to be a refreshing alternative for those of us who understand the challenges of assisted walking and who long for a greater sense of independence.There are many reasons to praise the genius of the Strutter design, but let me offer two from my personal experience:On my first day of having the Strutters, an ice storm blanketed Washington. As you know, ice and snow instill great fear in those forced to walk with crutches. "On October 2, I ruptured my Achilles tendon playing soccer. It was a typical weekend warrior injury. At my HMO, they told me it would be a long recuperation, and after they splinted my ankle, they sold me a pair of wooden crutches.Almost a week later, on the eve of surgery to repair my tendon, I was at church participating in an ordination ceremony. The Episcopal bishop of Washington, Ronald Haines, saw me on my crutches and said, "I know a man who has invented a new kind of crutches. He lives here in Washington; call me and I'll give you his number." He went on to describe the Strutters, which he had used when he'd suffered a broken leg.After surgery, I learned I would have another 8 weeks in a cast. I called Harry Herman, the inventor of Strutters. One of the first things he told me was that Strutters are not crutches! Crutches aren't designed to hold your whole weight, he explained, but Strutters are. We made an appointment and he fitted me with a neat blue pair. I was apprehensive at first about putting weight on my underarms. "We were able to see both the adult size and the pediatric size and to allow some of our patients to try them. The patients loved them. They thought that these crutches were more comfortable than regular crutches and easy to use. They also felt safe on them from the first time they tried them. Strutters just a few days ago, I learned from company founder Harry Herman about your society's Da Vinci Award and Sure Foot Inc.'s application for it. In response, I felt compelled to write to you to express my support and praise for Sure Foot Inc. and its revolutionary Sure Foot technology.Firstly, as a University of Illinois student living with cerebral palsy, I would like to thank your organization for its sponsorship of this award as well as for its efforts to positively acknowledge mobility-enhancing technology spanning across the spectrum of physical/mobility disabilities. Most importantly, however, I would like to take this opportunity to relay my story concerning Sure Foot technology and the indelible positive impact it has had on my life.Prior to 2005, my physical therapist and I were at a treatment crossroads. In order to re-gain crucial mobility and flexibility in my feet and ankles, we knew that I needed to part ways with the restrictive ankle/foot orthotics I had relied on virtually all of my life for support while walking. Yet, without a reliable source of alternative support, I feared that I would not be able to maintain my original supported stamina and mobility levels. In addition to this fear, I also worried about the seemingly unceasing progression (from 20 to 70 degrees) of both my lumbar scoliosis and thoracic kyphosis--a pattern of progression that was not helped by my time on a walker and worsened during my time on traditional loft strand crutches.
